The Silk Museum opened its doors in 1990. It is housed in the Kurtides Mansion, in Soufli, Evros Prefecture, and operates under the responsibility of the Piraeus Group Cultural Foundation.

In 1976, the daughter of Constantinos Kourtidis, Maria Kourtidi-Pastra, donated the Mansion in order to create the Silk Museum. In order to organize the Museum's permanent exhibition, on the subject of the city's sericulture and silk-making tradition, systematic historical, ethnological and architectural research began.

The Kourtidi Mansion was restored with authentic materials of its time.

The Silk Museum was expanded and reopened based on modern museum concepts. The new permanent exhibition creatively incorporated modern technologies and audio-visual media.

Today, the Silk Museum offers a living experience of the ancient Thracian tradition of sericulture and silk-making.
